Detailed selection process after clearing SSC CGL exam

The selection process of SSC CGL exam is primarily done in four stages. The four stages are Tier-I and Tier-II (Computer Based exam), Tier-III (Descriptive Test which consists of data entry test and Computer Proficiency Test) and Tier-IV.

The final selection of candidates depends on their overall performance in Tier-I, Tier-II and Tier-III exams. Finally speaking, the Tier-IV is qualifying in nature. The appearing candidates have to qualify each stage of this selection process separately to draw their names in the merit list.

Now, let’s look at the process after clearing Tier I exam

To appear in Tier-II round, the candidates have to successfully qualify Tier-I examination.

SSC CGL Tier – II

Tier-II examination consists of two papers i.e. English Language (200 questions) and Quantitative Aptitude (100 questions). These two papers will be of two hours duration. In English Language section paper, each question carries 1 mark while in Quantitative Aptitude; each question will be of 2 marks. 

The Paper 3 (Statistics) conducted in Tier-II exam will be held for candidates who have applied for the post of Statistical Investigator. Paper 3 (Statistics) will be of 200 marks and will comprise of 100 questions. 

The Paper 4 (Finance and Economics) conducted in SSC CGL Tier-II exam will be held for the candidates who have applied for the post of Assistant Audit Officer in CA & AG. Paper 4 (Finance and Economics) will be of 200 marks and will comprise of 40 questions in Finance and 80 questions in Economics. The duration of Paper 4 will be of 2 hours.  

Finally speaking, the total marks scored in Tier-II exam will be given importance for the final selection. The candidates who have qualified successfully for Tier-II exam will be called for Tier-III exam (Descriptive Paper).

SSC CGL Tier – III

Tier-III is a paper which is introduced to test the writing skills of the candidates. It will be descriptive type paper and will be of 100 marks. Tier-III paper will be conducted in offline mode (Paper Pen mode) and will be of 12th Class level. The qualifying marks for this exam will be 33% only. The appearing candidates have to complete this descriptive paper (Essay/ letter/ Application writing) in 1 hour (60 minutes).

SSC CGL Tier – IV

SSC CGL Tier-IV is conducted exclusively for the candidates who have applied for the post of Assistant Section Officer. The eligibility to appear in Tier-IV will depend entirely on the marks obtained by candidates in Tier-I and Tier-II. This selection round will comprise of Data Entry Skill Test or Computer Proficiency Test. In Data Entry Skill Test, the typing speed would be 35 words per minute. The selection round of SSC CGL Tier-IV will be qualifying in nature.

SSC CGL Final Selection

The appearing candidates have to qualify all the rounds separately to draw their names in the final merit list. The final merit list is prepared on the total marks obtained in Tier-I, Tier-II and Tier III. SSC will be releasing merit list of candidates for each category and post. Subsequently, the appointment letter will be sent by SSC to the selected candidates on the basis of their post preferences and ranks.
