Ideal tips to score well in English Section of SSC CHSL 2018-19 Tier 1 Exam

SSC CHSL Exam is conducted by Staff Selection Commission for higher secondary level aspirants. As we know that the required educational qualification is higher secondary therefore more aspirants apply for this exam. This exam has three phases and all these phases are important to qualify the exam. Hence, all the aspirants of SSC CHSL should give importance to all the sections of Tier 1 to cross the first step towards SSC CHSL job.

The first basic requirement to qualify SSC CHSL Tier is to know the exam pattern. Tier I is an objective test which have four sections such as:
  1. Quantitative Aptitude
  2. General Intelligence
  3. English Language
  4. General Awareness/General Knowledge
It has been observed that Quantitative Aptitude and English Language sections are the most complex sections of the lot. Therefore, these sections demand more attention, dedication, and lot of practice. If you master the grammar rules and practice the probable questions then English Language Section becomes easier to score.

English section will have questions such as

i) Reading Comprehension
While attempting Reading Comprehension, the aspirant should try to find the tone and idea of the passage. After understanding the main idea and facts described in the passage, it becomes easier for the aspirant to solve the given question. Firstly, it is important to read the question well and while reading you might get the answer. Do try to practice more and more. It will enhance your speed while solving even a lengthy question. Reading Comprehension is presumed to be highly scoring section as it does not require any conceptual thinking. It is your reading skills which plays a vital role in understanding the passage.

ii) Cloze Test
The questions in this section comprises of five blanks given in a passage which are to be filled by appropriate words. For making accurate option, do eliminate the different options. Thereafter, do read the passage without filling the gaps to understand the idea and theme of the passage. If you have a strong grip on concepts and grammar rules then it will be easier for you to fill the gaps correctly. To score maximum in this section, one needs to practice it thoroughly.

iii) Idioms & Phrases and one word substitution
The section of Idioms, Phrases and one word substitution has four questions. It should be prepared by attempting questions from previous years. This will give you a complete and comprehensive idea about the type of vocabulary asked in the question paper.

iv) Synonyms & Antonyms
Generally speaking, the section of Synonyms and Antonyms has two questions. This section can be prepared by learning new words from various sources like magazines, newspapers, TV news channels etc. Do make a detailed note about such unfamiliar words and find their correct synonyms and antonyms from dictionary.

v) Sentence Rearrangement
The section of Sentence Rearrangement has two questions which are to be rearranged. In this section, a sentence is given in a jumbled form which one has to rearrange in a logical way.

vi) Sentence Improvement
The section of Sentence Improvement comprises of a sentence with some error or sometimes there is no error. The candidate has to choose the best option which matches the phase being underlined or word being underlined. Try to read the sentence carefully to find the theme hidden in it. It will help you in choosing correct option from the given probable ones against each question.

vii) Spot the Error
The section of “Spot the Error” is based on parts of speech. The student has to pick the error and then mark it as the answer. This can be mastered by practicing questions which are based on parts of speech. To practice it thoroughly, the student can take the help of previous year question papers.
