Effective strategy to prepare for SSC CGL English Section

Staff Selection Commission conducts various exams but SSC CGL exam attracts maximum number of aspirants every year. It makes SSC CGL to be one of the most competitive exams and needs a thorough preparation. It has four sections namely, quantitative aptitude, general English, reasoning and general studies.

Out of these, English and Quantitative Aptitude have a vast syllabus. Most of the candidates find English to be very challenging section. Let us discuss the effective preparation strategy for English language section for SSC CGL Exam so that you can perform well in the exam.

SSC CGL English Section:

To prepare for English Section one can divide the study plan into four parts such as:

1. Basic Grammar: Learn the grammar rules from any reputed author’s or publication’s grammar book. Revise all parts of speech rules and practice them extensively.
2. Practice from previous year question papers to understand the level of the questions asked in the exam.
3. While practicing from previous year question papers mark important questions or some special rules with a highlighter in the book or note down in your regular notebook and revise them regularly.
4. Enhance your understanding of language flow by developing a habit of reading novels, newspapers. It will improve your vocabulary and reading skills. This exercise will help you to attempt Reading Comprehension easily and quickly whereas it takes lot of time to solve.
5. Practice “Arrangement of sentences” questions technically. Read all the sentences once and understand the theme and then search for the first sentence and link it with the other sentences to get the second one. It needs lot of practice and good knowledge.
6. To attempt cloze test it is advisable to read the paragraph without filling the gaps and understand the theme of the passage. It will help you to attempt it accurately. Accuracy counts more than speed in this question.
7. Learn the rules related to Active-Passive Voice and Direct – Indirect Speech as questions can easily be solved if you know the rules. It will help you score well also.
8. Learn and understand the difficult words that you come across while reading newspaper or any article. Make a note of the difficult words and find the antonyms and synonyms simultaneously. There are 3-4 questions based on vocabulary therefore there is no need to spend much time to mug up 2000 or so words, just try to retain the difficult words that you have come across, it will help you a lot. Do the similar practice for one word substitution and idiom and phrases.
