Which Job is superior : SSC CGL or Bank PO?

In India, a Government Job is a blessing. There are millions of students who are dreaming of having it and are working day and night. The one big question which must be arising in their mind is “Which is good job – SSC CGL officer or Bank PO? 

 In this article, we will discuss both of them and try to differentiate and compare between them on various levels by discussing their pros and cons. You cannot arrive to any definite answer, which is better, as it all depends on one’s preferences, choices and needs.

SSC CGL (Staff Selection Commission, Combined Graduate Level) Examination

This examination is considered to be one of the biggest Government Job recruitment examinations held in India.

Every year, SSC (Staff Selection Commission) conducts CGL exam for recruitment of personnel’s in a range of Central Government Departments such as Central Secretariat Service, Excise Inspector, CAG, Statistical Investigator, AO, Central Vigilance Commission, Intelligence Bureau, CBI, Ministry of Railways / External Affairs / Defence and a few other Ministries.  

Bank PO (Probationary Officer) Examination

In Bank PO (Probationary Officer) Examination, Banks recruits thousands of personnel’s every year.
Every year, IBPS conducts Combined Written Examination for the appointment of Bank Probationary officers. As compared to SSC CGL, the number of vacancies is much higher in Bank PO exam.    

Now, let us compare both SSC CGL and Bank PO on various levels. 
  1. Job Profile
SSC CGL

The candidate appointed as an officer recruited through SSC CGL performs the following duties:
  • He executes clerical work in offices like answering RTI queries.
  • He crafts notes and also does filing work.
  • He performs general administration work.
  • He performs field Jobs which involve travelling.
  • He takes active part in raids, Inspections, surveillance etc.
  • He helps in shaping nationwide policies by looking after the back office work.
  • He examine and scrutinize various organisation balance sheet
  • He gets a permanent job in Delhi, if recruited in CSS
IBPS PO:

The candidate appointed as Bank PO is supposed to perform the following duties:
  • He has to deal with the customer
  • He has a targeted Job
  • He has to handle cash activities at the bank
  • He has to manage Clearance of Payments
  • He has to manage various customer related issues and problems.
  • He has to bear high work pressure.
  • He has to manage official communication.
  1. Work Pressure
SSC-CGL
  • As compared to Bank PO, the recruited candidate has to face less work pressure and the job is more stress-free.
  • The candidate has to perform many targets   related to that post which include supervision, Administrative Task, or any other task given by the senior officials from time to time. 
Bank PO
  • The work pressure is much higher for Bank PO as he has to deal with various types of people.
  • His work primarily includes General Banking, Administrative Task, or any other task given by the senior management from time to time.
  • The Bank PO has to understand fundamentals of Banking by undergoing rigorous training. He is trained for works like accounting, marketing, investment, billing, finance, human resources, agriculture banking, and general banking.  
      3. Working hours

SSC CGL
  • In SSC CGL, the officer will have a proper work schedule.
  • There is no proper timing and no extra hour work.
  • There is Five day working for him.
Banks
  • There is a proper schedule of working time for Bank PO but still there is heavy workload for him. So, he has to work after office time.
  • In the closing time, month of March, the workload is presumably highest.
  • There is six day working except 2nd and last Saturday.
     4. TRANSFER

SSC CGL
  • For the officers recruited, generally transfers takes place every 4-5 years, except for CSS posts.
BANKS
  • Generally speaking, the transfers for Bank PO take place every 2-5 years. 
  • In both types of Organizations, the transfer takes place on the basis of seniority/promotion.
SALARY
  • As far as salaries are concerned, there is no such main difference between them but after the 7th Pay Commission, the salary of SSC CGL officer is slightly higher.
     5. FUTURE GROWTH

SSC CGL
  • Every 4-5 years, there are promotions for SSC officers.
  • There is a possibility that an officer will be promoted to higher post. Let us explain it
  1. The Auditor will become Senior Auditor in 3 years.
  2. The Assistant Enforcement Officer will become Enforcement Officer in 4-5 years.
  3. The Income Tax Officer will become Assistant Commissioner, then Deputy Commissioner and Finally Commissioner.
  4. The Assistant in CSS will be promoted to the next post – SO (which is a Group-B Gazetted Officer post) and can go up to Joint Secretary.
Bank PO
  • Every 2-3 years, promotions in the Banks takes place in the following scale:
  • Assistant Manager
  • Branch Manager
  • AGM
  • GM
In Banks, the promotions are comparatively faster because banking policy ensures a sound and stable procedure for promoting a probationary officer at regular time period.

      6. Social Status in Society:
  • The social status for SSC CGL officer is much higher than that of Bank PO. It is because SSC CGL officer is considered to be powerful as well as influential. So, every person wants to socialize with him. The social status of SSC CGL officer is higher than that of Bank PO.

  • The posting is far away from home.
  • Sometimes, they are posted in different State.
  • They have to face Bureaucratic Pressure.
IBPS PO

Pros
  • The Bank PO has high chances of promotion.
  • They have low transfer cycle
  • They have better salary
  • They enjoy lower loan rates
Cons
  • There is probability of Rural Postings.
  • They have to deal with varied Customer Dealings.
  • They have to face high work pressure
